Gordon Anderson began his career in the theatre, directing for many of the
UK’s leading theatre and opera companies, including the Royal Court
Theatre, Manchester Royal Exchange, The Bush Theatre, Scottish Opera and
English Touring Opera. He was Artistic Director of ATC where he
commissioned, developed and directed new work that toured throughout the
UK. He also regularly directed Edinburgh Fringe Festival comedy shows and
put together THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN, directing their early live
He trained as a TV director at the BBC and went on to write for and direct
THE CATHERINE TATE SHOW, which was nominated for six BAFTAs and
won a string of other awards including Most Popular Comedy at the National
Television Awards and a Best Performance nomination at the International
He also set up and directed the first series of THE INBETWEENERS for
Bwark/Channel 4. Other TV directing work includes SUBURBAN SHOOTOUT
for Feelgood Fiction/Channel 5, MOVING WALLPAPER for Kudos/ITV1,
BADULTS for the Comedy Unit/BBC3, HOFF THE RECORD for Me &
You/UKTV and GATES for Feelgood Fiction/Sky. He directed seven episodes,
over four series, of SHAMELESS for Company Pictures/Channel 4, including
a feature-length special written by Paul Abbott.
He has been commissioned as a screenwriter by the BBC, UKTV, Dragonfly
Films and Working Title Films and he has feature films in development with
Temple Hill/New Sparta, Bedlam Films and Fred Films.
Most recently he has directed ENDEAVOUR for MAMMOTH/ITV1 and three
series of LOVESICK, the hit Netflix show, for Clerkenwell Films.
He is currently directing SHETLAND for BBC1.
